HOW TO SELECT A N95 RESPIRATOR
NYPPE, the manufacturer of medical grade, American-made PPE products, can help you select the right N95 respirator.
Who wears a N95 respirator?
A N95 respirator reduces your exposure to particles in the air, including small particle aerosols and large droplets. In normal times, N95 respirators are worn to protect users from dust while working and from air pollution in many large cities, most notably in China. That noted, N95 respirators also are one of the items used to help prevent airborne disease transmission, particularly in healthcare settings.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center for Disease Control does not recommend the routine use of respirators outside of the workplace. This is mainly because N95 masks should be reserved for healthcare workers regularly exposed to COVID-19. NYPPE is one of the American companies working hard to ensure there are enough N95 respirators for everyone who needs one.

What does N95 stand for?
N-95 is an efficiency rating from the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) that means the N95 respirator filters out 95% of non-oil particles larger than .3 microns (.00003 cm). A N95 mask is evaluated, tested and approved by NIOSH per the requirements in 42 CFR Part 84.
How do you select a N95 respirator?
A N95 respirator should be tight-fitting and comfortable enough to keep on as long as you are at work. That means breathing ease, mask weight and coolness also should be considered.
Ideally, a N95 respirator should be discarded after each patient encounter and after aerosol-generating procedures. It also should be discarded when it becomes damaged or deformed, such as:
- No longer forms an effective seal to the face
- Becomes wet or visibly dirty
- Breathing becomes difficult
- If contaminated with blood, respiratory or nasal secretions, or other bodily fluids from patients
